Interior Design Ideas of Luxury Living Rooms

Home Decor

What makes a luxurious living room? It depends on the person who owns it. For one person, it is a huge room, perhaps even a room with two levels, with overstuffed sofas with somewhat frayed upholstery, stacks of coffee table books and a huge chandelier or two sporting hundreds of crystals.

For another it is a room made mostly of glass filled with Eames chairs and other 20th century furnishings. Another luxurious living room is mostly a space-aged entertainment center. Its components may or may not be expensive, but they are impressive. Following are some examples of luxury living rooms:

Sleek and Modern With Touches of Tradition

One living room may have walls painted ice white with black trim, with the color scheme repeated in the furniture. This includes two wing chairs, a settee and ottoman with biscuit tufted cushions and a sofa upholstered in silvery-gray cloth.

Light is provided by a large, recessed light from which hangs a multi-armed chandelier with shaded lights and a contemporary lamp with a drum shade on a glass and iron lamp table.

The carpet has a low, soft gray pile, and the artwork is made of black and white photos. Pops of color are provided by blue pillows and a pot of what looks like tall, green grass.

Another modern but luxurious living room is mostly tans, browns and gold, with small patchwork area rugs and a decorative chandelier filled with golden crystals. There’s a modular sofa upholstered in lustrous tan fabric and two matching armchairs.

The semi-sheer curtains are light brown. Wall sconces beside the windows add to the light, and a large, angular, black and white coffee table keeps the brown and gold shades from being overwhelming.

Unabashed Luxury

This is the type of living room a lot of people think of when they think of luxury. Lit by a huge, glittering white chandelier, this living room has a borne in the center and is filled with richly upholstered fauteuils, sofas, bergeres and settees full of intricately embroidered throw pillows.

The coffee, sofa, lamp and occasional tables are also beautifully carved with marble tops. These tables hold Sevres-tyle vases, beautifully wrought candleholders and clocks, crystal épergnes and vaseline glass bottles with stoppers.

The windows are lavishly covered in heavy drapes, pelmets and sheer curtains. The floor is dominated by an amazing Indian style carpet. The one nod to modernity are the recessed lights in the soffits above the windows.

Another opulent living room is also full of French furnishings, including armchairs and sofas. This one has French windows that open to a garden, and these windows are decorated with golden-brown Austrian shades and heavy drapes that can be tied back with tassels.

A baby grand piano waits to be played in the corner near a screened fireplace. Before the screen is an upholstered bench, behind the bench stands a coffee table with cabriole legs.

Round, gold-rimmed lamp tales, one holding bibelots and the other holding a crystal and vermeil candelabra separate the seating units. The walls and ceiling are painted cafe au lait, and a huge Savonnerie-style carpet dominates the room.
